Storm windows are a smart move for a lot of homes here in Pittsburg, especially with our wild weather swings. They add an extra layer of insulation, cut down on noise, and give your primary windows a break from the elements. But getting them installed isn't just about picking a product; it's about timing it right. Here's what I've learned over the years about when to schedule, what weather means for the job, and how to keep those storm windows doing their job year-round.

When's the Best Time to Install Storm Windows in Pittsburg?

Honestly, the best time is usually before you need them. That means thinking ahead. Most folks start thinking about storm windows when the first cold snap hits, or when a big storm rolls in. By then, everyone else is thinking the same thing, and you might be waiting a while, right?

I always tell my customers to think about late spring or early fall. Why then?

  • Late Spring (April to June): The really cold weather's behind us, and the scorching summer heat hasn't fully kicked in yet. The ground isn't frozen, and we're usually past the worst of the spring rains. Temperatures are mild, which is ideal for working outside and for any sealants or caulking to cure properly. Plus, you're getting ahead of the summer storm season and prepping for the next winter.
  • Early Fall (September to October): This is another sweet spot. The extreme heat of July and August is gone, and we're not usually dealing with ice and snow yet. Similar to spring, the mild temperatures are perfect for installation. You'll have that extra layer of protection firmly in place before the really brutal Pittsburg winters hit, saving you on heating bills right away.

What you want to avoid, if you can, is the dead of winter or the peak of summer. Trying to install storm windows when it's five degrees outside, or when the humidity is through the roof and it's 95 degrees, just makes the job harder and can affect how well the installation holds up. Materials expand and contract with temperature, and we want them to settle in nicely.
